Due to the
fact that Themba Sweet is in the UK (Footiecall research) I have taken it upon myself
to do a road to The FA Cup Final!
There is
just something about the FA Cup. Like the old Football cliché, there is a
romance to it. It’s more captivating than the 2 legged affairs in both Spain
and Italy. It’s also the oldest club cup competition worldwide yet there is
still “that” appeal to it. The clubs in the lower leagues look forward to it,
reasoning? Crawley Town last season travelled to Old Trafford. How would they
have done it without this competition? Every season in the FA Cup, there are “Giant
Killers”. You don’t get this in other leagues. You just don’t. So without
further ado…
TEAM:
Liverpool Football Club
ESTABLISHED:
1892
FA Cup: 7
time Winners
3rd
round – Liverpool 5-1 Oldham
Liverpool
went 0-1 down due to a Robbie Simpson wonder strike! But that seemed to have
woken The Mighty Reds up, knocked 5 without any answer for the visitors. This
game, however, will be best remembered to for the racist controversy
surrounding Tom Adeyemi. It’s a dam shame.
4th round – Liverpool 2-1 Manchester United
There is no other rivalry like in England like this. The 2
most decorated clubs in England clashed at Anfield for this 4th tie.
Liverpool went ahead through Daniel “I’m not injured” Agger. United equalised
through Park “My car” and the winner scored in the 88th minute that
send Kuyt flying high (See what I did there)
5th round – Liverpool 6 – 1 Brighton
Gus Poyet, came to Anfield to try and Brighton it up
(Straightens tie) what stood out for most in this game was, 3 own goals. Not to
mention Downing and Andy Carroll scoring. What people seem to miss is at this
stage of the season, Brighton were top of the championship and playing some wonderful
football.
6th Round – Liverpool 2 – 1 Stoke City
The Potters (no relation) arrived at Anfield smelling blood.
Liverpool’s league form was starting to get worse. However Suarez opened the
scoring, Crouchie equalised and then in the 2nd half, Downing scored
a screamer after a neat 1-2 with Gerrard. Semi vs Everton booked.
Semi-final – Liverpool 2 – 1 Everton
Merseyside derby in London. Liverpool’s 2nd trip
to Wembley in a matter of months. Liverpool went behind to some horrendous
defending by Jamie Carragher. Distin, not to be outdone, returned the favour
for Suarez to score, enter Andy Carroll. Scoring the winner…after missing a
sitter.
TEAM: Chelsea Football Club
ESTABLISHED: 2002
FA Cup: 6 times winners
3rd round – Chelsea 4 – 0 Portsmouth
The 2010 Fa Cup final replay. It wasn’t as one sided as the
score line suggested. Chelsea went into the break a goal up courtesy of Juan
Mata. But for long periods they struggled to break down Pompey. A second half
route ensued.
4th round - QPR 0 – 1 Chelsea
This game will forever be remembered as the Terry – Ferdinand
affair. Soft penalty awarded too.
5th Round – Birmingham 0 – 2 Chelsea (Replay)
With AVB now sacked, it was up to new Man in charge and RDM to guide Chelsea
through to the quarters. And boy did John Terry do a good job.
6th round – Leicester 2 - 5 Chelsea
With John Terry and RDM at the helm, Chelsea are starting to find their
feet again. This dominant performance, vindicates that. Goals by Kalou, Torres,
Cahill and Meireles eased Chelsea into the semi’s and a mouthwatering clash
with Spurs.
Semifinal – Tottenham HotSpurs 2 – 5 Chelsea
A game that was supposed to be a nail biter, turned into a rather one
sided affair. Easily the most controversial decision of the FA Cup this season
was a goal being awarded that never was. Chelsea through to the final….
PREDICTION: Liverpool 2 - 0 Chelsea
