Pep, where to next?

‘Sup footie nuts?

Firstly, a huge thanks to everyone who has joined us on our journey so far. The support and banter we have been getting after every post has been nothing but phenomenal. We appreciate every comment.

So Pep Guardiola is about to have his last game in charge of FC Barcelona in the next 2 weeks. Ending one of the most successful trophy hauls in such a short space of time that the football world has ever seen. A side brimming with world class stars such as Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, David Villa, Puyol and Dani Alves to name but a few.

No Roman, leave me off!

Few people know that Pep has been on a yearly contract for the last 3 seasons. Refusing to commit to longer than that stating: “Things change so quickly at Barcelona, you cannot commit to more than a year.” This comment alone is a huge indication that this legend of coach, not only knew Barcelona, he understood it. He loved this club, understood this club… it really was to him "Més que un club" more than just a club.

Pep started his professional football journey at  Barca’s famous youth training facility. This is where he was introduced to the “tiki-taka’ style of play. He enjoyed a successful spell at FC Barcelona’s senior team where he played in Johan Cruyff’s dream team before moving to Italy, Qatar and Mexico.  It was when he went back to Barca’s b team as a coach when things starting taking off. When Fran Rijkaard resigned, he took over and introduced the “tiki-taka” football to the world. This is Barcelona’s style of play today. What made them the team they are.

When Pep sold Deco and Ronaldhino the football world all thought that this was a mad man. When quizzed about this, he responded “They do not fit into my plans, so they can leave.” And that plan was to get Barcelona playing the Barcelona way. We all know the trophy hauls and stats. We all know he built the team around Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. We all know the accolades. What we DON’T know, is where to next for Pep? And will be as successful at another club as he was with his beloved Blaugrana? My answer? No. Here’s why:

Pep was raised FC Barcelona. Everything in his blood is about it. Their style, the history, the war…for him to walk away and try to implement this type of football will take a generation. It will mean that a club will need a decade of patience in order to get anywhere near that type of football. That type of football is what Pep knows. And only knows. And YET, Chelsea has already approached him to be their next coach. Typical really, not thinking it through. The team with the least amount of patience ha ha ha. So where to? The only team I can think of him coaching is perhaps The Spanish national team. Why? The core of the current squad is the core of Barcelona at the moment.  The styles are similar. And with Del Bosque’s contract coming to an end, not too mention the current crop of youngsters are all Pep's products Alcantara, Tello etc it seems the likely fit.

Spain? Maybe *Meh*
